Ailís is deaf/hearing-impaired. She wears hearing aids and lip reads. She sustained her hearing loss having contracted encephalitis as a child.  

She is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the arts via her work with Arts & Disability Ireland, Unlimited UK, Shape Arts, DaDafest, the British Music Collection, as a panelist for Sound and Music’s Pathways Scheme and as an Ivors Academy Committee Member.

Ailís has been making work about sensory impairment and deafness since 2007. Here is an article by Ailís in The Journal about invisible disability. Below is some of the work she has created:
