Ailís is deaf/hearing-impaired. She wears hearing aids and lip/face-reads. She also experiences tinnitus and hyperacusis.
Ailís has been making work about sensory impairment and deafness since 2007.

She is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the arts via her work with Arts & Disability Ireland, Unlimited UK, Shape Arts, DaDafest, the British Music Collection, as a panelist for Sound and Music’s Pathways.
Ailís sits on the Ivors Academy Equality, Diversity and Inclusion steering group.
