The BBC New Music Show recently broadcast Ní Ríain's BBC Philharmonic/Manchester International Festival/National Symphony Orchestra Ireland commission [2023] 'The Land Grows Weary of its Own'. Conducted by Vimbayi Kaziboni.

"A very striking orchestral texture of string glissandi and overtone-saturated drone sonorities from the brass instruments." - The Journal of Music

"Ailís Ní Ríain is a deaf/hard of hearing composer and has never heard birdsong.  Her piece The Land Grows Weary of its Own poignantly imagines what a bird might sound like as global warming increases and underlines the possibility that soon none of us may be able to listen to bird calls.  There was a striking use of glissandos in the score, from the passing sighs in horns and trumpets in the atmospheric opening section to the harrowing, cascading full orchestral downward slide near the end of the work.  Other notable recurring features were a series of lyrical, songlike phrases given out by a choir of flutes and penetrating, portentous tolling from a bell plate, but perhaps the most affecting gesture was reserved for the closing bars, in which bird water warblers were played by several musicians, spaced far apart onstage.  Player by player gradually dropped out, leaving just one remaining, before they too ceased and thus, Ailís Ní Ríain’s compelling piece finally faded from earshot.  Warmly received by the audience, Vimbayi Kaziboni and the BBC Philharmonic’s detailed account was ideally paced and balanced." - Paul Conway, Musical Opinion
